Using the Total Number of Shares Field to Calculate Per-Share Valuation

Updated over a week ago

Introduction

The Total Number of Shares parameter allows you to specify the number of shares outstanding for a company, enabling accurate per-share equity calculations.

This value is essential for calculating metrics like Equity Value per Share particularly helpful for client reporting, investor presentations, and internal benchmarking

Where to Find It

  • Go to the Valuations Overview screen

Access this within the Valuation flow.

  • Click the Change Parameters button

Located in the top-right corner of the screen.

  • Locate the Total Number of Shares field

    Found under the General section.

  • Enter the total number of shares

Use whole numbers only (decimals are not accepted).

  • Click Update

This will apply the changes to your valuation inputs.

  • Adjust the valuation perspective

Above the valuation table on the left, open the Valuation Metric dropdown.

This allows you to switch between different value perspectives, updating the football field and levels of value charts accordingly.

  • Select Equity Value per Share

The charts will refresh automatically to reflect this selection.

Best Practices

  • Always use a whole number (e.g., 1,200,000—not 1.2M)

  • Values must fall within a valid range: 1 to 100,000,000,000

  • Confirm the per-share calculations in the Valuation Overview section

Where It Appears

  • In the table for All valuation methods

  • In Word and PowerPoint exports
